This week at The Workshop

There are two very different projects that have been keeping our stonemasons busy in the workshop this week, one is a unique post tensioned staircase for a property in Sweden and the other is a traditional cantilever staircase for a new build residence in Ascot.

The post-tensioned staircase in Sweden is, like many of our installations, a one of a kind design. The aim of the project is to make quarter tonne blocks of marble appear weightless, creating what looks like an impossible stack of stone. The picture above shows the versatility of this beautiful material and how different surface finishes are used to best effect. On the right side of the photograph you can see the dull grey unseen surface, whereas on the left you can see a finished tread. The colour and variation of the Bosco Di Fiore marble is really made apparent through careful polishing, it is through this honest approach to natural materials that The Stonemasonry Company Limited is able to create works like this, enabling clients to use solid stone instead of cladding a steel or concrete structure. 

Shaped Portland Stone Steps 

The second staircase being shaped in the workshop this week is a grand, single flight, traditional, cantilever stone staircase, the centrepiece of our clients’ new home. We are always delighted to welcome visitors to our workshop so it was great when the clients for this project came to our workshop this week to see their bespoke Portland stone staircase in production. We were able to discuss all the stages of the fabrication and design process from how we shape the steps to discussing the colour of the spindles, which is always of great benefit to both our clients and to our team.
